If you are a neat freak and a parent at the same time, you have undoubtedly wondered at some point about the best kind of furniture for a home with small kids. Couches are a big purchase and so you may have thought about your options for the best child friendly sofas.

In this article, we will look at some of the criteria for the best child friendly sofas you can find. These will be the most durable couches for families. Particularly families with little children.

We made a sofa purchase fairly recently and really wanted a specific velvet sofa. At the same time, it was important to me that very few things in our home were easily destroyed by our children. So did we get that velvet sofa? Yes, we did!

Are velvet sofas child friendly?

If you are like me, you probably think a velvet sofa is the worst idea with any babies or little children around.

You’ll be surprised to know that velvet sofas are easy to clean. The faster you get at any stains or spills, the better. It is best to not let any substances get absorbed into the fabric, of course.

You need to make sure you don’t get the fabric too wet in the process of cleaning and then give it a lot of time to dry out properly after cleaning.

Keeping those points in mind, it is handy to know that you don’t have to stay away from velvet sofas because they are some of the most durable couches for families.

  1. Leather. There are quite a few products on the market from wipes to sprays that will help you to easily get stains off leather sofas.
  1. Polyester. It is as easy as wiping down your polyester sofa with a sponge that is a bit damp rather than soaking wet.
  1. Linen. Avoid harsh detergents and do not rub or scrub too hard when trying to get out stains. Many linen sofas also allow you to take off the fabric for a more thorough wash in a washing machine.

Based on my own research, here are some of the most durable sofas I have found in the past.

I would say that they are the best child friendly sofas.

  1. The SWYFT Model 01 is the one we currently have in a three and two seater and we love them. They have been very easy to clean and, believe me, with a 1 and 4 year old at home, we have had cause to clean them many times!

I must also add that they are very comfortable for both seating and napping. I’d have preferred for them to have a broader or wider seating base but that’s just me being picky.

We purchased it from John Lewis and it was assembled for us very quickly indeed! I believe Swyft pride themselves on making furniture that is easy to assemble. It is comforting to know that, should we move again, it will be easy to disassemble and put together again.

  1. We also have this lovely Logan small double velvet sofabed in our home office which is comfy and has been used by all of us since we purchased it a year ago. It has had one spill that was very easily wiped off and several attempts at scratching it with pens and toys (you can imagine who by!) have been unsuccessful at making any dents or tears in it.
  1. This Dunelm Beatrice Polyester sofa comes highly reviewed. It looks pretty classic and is also very roomy. It is definitely good value for money as are many Dunelm furniture pieces (in my opinion).
  1. I’ve experienced the luxury feel of a John Lewis Camden sofa at a friend’s home and I must say it felt amazing. For a home with three little boys who didn’t take it easy on the furniture, it also looked really good! Apparently, it had been subject to lots of rough activity and yet it looked fairly new. It comes highly recommended. It is large, soft and seems to envelope you when you sit in it.

I think it probably helped a lot that my friend’s leather sofa was black.

It is a good idea to make colour one of your big considerations when picking out sofas with kids at home.

As a rule, go with darker colours to hide stains.

Here are some good colours for a family home sofa:

  1. Black. I understand that some people might find black far too dark for the bright and neutral type of home decor that people tend to go for these days. However, if you choose to go darker to hide stains on your sofa, go all the way dark and choose black.
  2. Dark brown
  3. Teal
  4. Midnight blue
  5. Burnt orange

So what, in your view, are some of the best child friendly sofas?

Do you have a sofa that you would recommend as highly durable for a family home with little kids?
